A long time ago… Dolby didn’t know that their technology could be used in Video Games. One day, it was suggested to me that we could use a setting on the Super Nintendo console to make a Dolby Surround Amp treat sound output from the game as if it were positioned in 3D space. So we gave it a go, and it seemed to work!
I gave Dolby a call and tried to explain what we were doing. I remember having to convince them we knew what we were talking about, as they were completly oblivious to the concept of Games + Dolby. In order to verify this could be done, Dolby sent an engineer down to our studio with a large Dolby Decoder Rack, and tested.
It worked of course, and we re-wrote history, introducing Dolby into the world of Video Games.
